Hugues Picardet (1560-1641), Crown Prosecutor in the Parliament of Burgundy, was a noted citizen of Dijon. In the course of his life he gathered a library of some 2000 volumes, mainly on the subjects of law, religion and classical history, which at the time was considered remarkable, and of which some volumes, held nowadays in a number of different repositories, can be identified. What is less well known is that he also had a fine music library, thought to have contained between 200 and 300 volumes. Some thirty music publications which once belonged to Picardet have been identified in Paris BNF, Brussels BR, London BL and Washington LC. These consist mainly of songs or court melodies published in Paris by Ballard, and of three-part Italian music published at Venice by Gardano. These volumes, of which several are unique, are all annotated in manuscript (signatures, sometimes dates and places of purchase, or lines of verse in Latin), and sometimes retain their original 17th century limp binding. The inventory of Picardet's property after his death indicates the presence of a sufficient number of instruments for regular music-making, and his sister Anne, widow of François Forget de Molière et d'Essertines, published collections of light poetry in French set to contemporary court melodies as early as 1618. There is some doubt as to how this music library found its way from Dijon to the four national collections. We know that some of Picardet's books joined the collection of Jacques-Auguste II de Thou (who married Picardet's daughter), but there is no certainty as to what happened to the music books. One volume got to the Fétis collection by way of that of Farrenc; others were bought for the Conservatoire de Musique by Jean-Baptiste Weckerlin from an unidentified seller.
